Prevacid Uses:
Prevacid works by blocking stomach acid. The medication is used to treat esophagitis, ulcers, and other problems caused by too much stomach acid.
Prevacid Directions:
Generally Prevacid is to be taken once a day, although some will need to take two doses per day. It should be swallowed one hour before a meal. If you take it after a meal, much less of the medication will be absorbed. You should swallow the capsule whole and not crush or split it. If you have a hard time taking pills, you may open the capsule and mix the contents with a small amount of applesauce. Take the applesauce and be careful not to chew. Never take more than prescribed.
Prevacid Side Effects:
When taking Prevacid, you may experience nausea or stomach pain. If these side effects are persistent or bothersome, call your doctor. Other more serious side effects include diarrhea, muscle pain, changes in stool color, chest pain, stomach pain, rapid heartbeat, breathing trouble, mood changes, or vision changes. Call your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. If you feel that you are having an allergic reaction to Prevacid, you should also get medical attention. These symptoms include difficulty breathing, itching, swelling, or dizziness.
Prevacid Warnings:
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including sucralfate, iron, theophylline, ampicillin, digoxin, or ketoconazole. Do not start or stop any medication without doctor or pharmacist approval. This drug may cause an allergic reaction in patients with a history of sensitivity to the following: Omeprazole/Lansoprazole.
Prevacid Drug Interactions:
When taken at the same time as other drugs, Prevacid can cause a reduction in the effectiveness of those drugs. For example, if you take sucralfate (Carafate), you should take them at least thirty minutes apart, of the amount of Prevacid you absorb will be limited. Other drugs in this category include digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), and iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron). Talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking.
Prevacid Missed Dose:
Prevacid should be taken according to a dosing routine. If you forget, take it when you remember, but return to your regular routine after that. Do not take it if it?s almost time for your next dose. Use caution to avoid double dosing.
Prevacid Storage:
Store Prevacid in a dark, dry place, and keep it at room temperature. Do not store where children can reach it.
Anything Else I Should Know About Prevacid:
When taking Prevacid, your stomach will produce less acid. This will relieve the symptoms of erosive esophagitis, ulcers in the intestines or stomach, and other disorders caused by having too much stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellis syndrome.
