How Taken:
Fluoxetine usually is taken once or twice a day. To be effective, it should be taken regularly. Make a habit of taking it at the same time you do some other daily activity. It may be 4 weeks before you feel any relief from your depression, but the drug's effects should last about 9 months after a 3-month treatment regimen. For obsessive-compulsive disorder, the full effect may take 5 weeks to appear.
Fluoxetine Uses:
The prescription Fluoxetine is given to for the treatment of panic disorder, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, bulimia (binge eating and purging). Some women also take Fluoxetine for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), including symptoms such as tension, mood swings, and irritability as well as physical effects such as bloating and breast tenderness for a week to two weeks before a woman's menstrual period. Taking Fluoxetine can also treat other problems.
Fluoxetine Directions:
When using Fluoxetine, you should follow the directions carefully. You can take Fluoxetine with or without food. However, you should always swallow each tablet whole at the same time each day. If you take a weekly pill, take it on the same day each week. It may take a few weeks of Fluoxetine therapy before you feel any differently. Your doctor may want you to take additional tests or schedule appointments to supervise your Fluoxetine therapy.
Fluoxetine Side Effects:
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Fluoxetine. More common side effects may include: Abnormal dreams, abnormal ejaculation, abnormal vision, anxiety, diminished sex drive, dizziness, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, flushing, gas, headache, impotence, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sinusitis, sleepiness, sore throat, sweating, tremors, upset stomach, vomiting, weakness, yawning.Less common side effects may include: Abnormal taste, agitation, bleeding problems, chills, confusion, ear pain, emotional instability, fever, frequent urination, high blood pressure, increased appetite, loss of memory, palpitations, ringing in the ears, sleep disorders, weight gain. In children and adolescents, less common side effects may also include: Agitation, excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, hyperactivity, mania or hypomania (inappropriate feelings of elation and/or rapid thoughts), nosebleeds, personality changes, and thirst. A wide variety of other very rare reactions have been reported during Fluoxetine therapy. If you develop any new or unexplained symptoms, tell your doctor without delay.
Fluoxetine Warnings/Precautions:
Use caution if you have to drive or operate machinery. This drug causes some to feel dizzy or drowsy. Do not do anything potentially dangerous until you know how Fluoxetine will make you feel. Do not drink alcohol while using Fluoxetine. Combining this medication with alcohol may lead to increased drowsiness or dizziness.
Fluoxetine Drug Interactions:
Do not use Fluoxetine if you have also used monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last two weeks. It can trigger a potentially fatal reaction. Fatal reactions are also possible when you take Fluoxetine with thioridazine (Mellaril), so make sure to space them at least five weeks apart. It's important that your doctor know about any history of diabetes, liver disease, seizures, kidney disease, or mania or suicidal thoughts. Women who are breastfeeding, or that are pregnant, should talk to their doctor about whether Fluoxetine is right for them.
Fluoxetine Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Fluoxetine Overdose:
Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. An overdose of Fluoxetine can be fatal. In addition, combining Fluoxetine with certain other drugs can cause symptoms of overdose. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Common symptoms of Fluoxetine overdose include : Nausea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, sleepiness, vomiting. Other symptoms of Fluoxetine overdose include: Coma, delirium, fainting, high fever, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, mania, rigid muscles, sweating, stupor.
Fluoxetine Storage:
Store in a dry place at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 F). Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
Anything Else I Should Know About Fluoxetine:
Talk to your doctor about Fluoxetine usage if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. This medication is in FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether it will cause any harm to unborn babies. This drug is excreted in breast milk; do not breastfeed and take Fluoxetine at the same time without talking to your doctor.
